'Khalistani' slur against a Sikh police officer led to the filing of a formal complaint against unknown BJP leaders

The West Bengal Police took action on Friday by lodging an FIR against individuals identified as "unknown BJP leaders" in connection with the incident involving the derogatory term "Khalistani" being directed at a Sikh police officer.

This incident occurred during a BJP rally in Sandeshkhali, prompting West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to share a video of the IPS officer questioning whether such a label would have been applied to him if he weren't wearing a turban.

The West Bengal Police, in a video released on Wednesday, implicated BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari as the individual responsible for using the disparaging term against the Sikh officer.

The FIR was registered under Sections 295A, 505(2), and 34 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to deliberately and maliciously outraging religious sentiments, making statements to promote enmity between different groups, and acts committed by multiple individuals with a shared intention, respectively.

The complaint, filed by Gurmeet Singh, alleges that unidentified members or leaders of the BJP labeled the Sikh police officer as a 'Khalistani' with the intent to incite religious animosity and foster discord between communities.
