An Indian-American White House official entrusted with addressing the opioid epidemic has found himself embroiled in allegations of fostering a "toxic" work environment, as per reports.
Rahul Gupta, who serves as a director at the White House, has been singled out by various past and present officials from the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP). These individuals have pointed fingers at the 'drug czar', accusing him of overseeing "significant staff turnover and widespread discontent," according to accounts shared with Politico.
The accusations levied against Gupta depict him as "egocentric and 'prima donna'," with a primary focus on bolstering his public persona, as reported by the publication. Politico's coverage, drawing from insights provided by nine sources familiar with the inner workings of the office, portrays Gupta's alleged preoccupation with his public image as a significant factor contributing to the purportedly unhealthy work atmosphere.
These allegations have surfaced amidst a backdrop of notable staff departures within the office, with at least eight senior officials and numerous others tendering resignations in recent months, Politico reveals. Such departures, amounting to approximately 75 individuals exiting the office, have evidently hampered the ONDCP's ability to fulfill crucial responsibilities and meet essential deadlines.
Amidst the turmoil, one unnamed former official quoted by Politico underscored the significance of introspection, noting, "When everybody leaves, it can’t be ‘everybody is the problem.’ On some level, you might be the problem."
