Russia brushes off the US's warning about nuclear weapons in space as malicious fabrication

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov has dismissed recent US reports alleging the deployment of Russian nuclear weapons in space as a "malicious fabrication," according to a report by Russian state-owned news agency TASS released on Thursday.

These assertions emerged following the United States' communication to Congress and European allies regarding new intelligence concerning Russian nuclear capabilities, which purportedly present an international threat.

However, a source informed news agency Reuters that these purported new capabilities, specifically linked to Russian endeavors in developing space-based weaponry, do not currently pose an imminent danger to the United States.

Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, refrained from offering substantive commentary on these reports until official details are disclosed by the White House. He further suggested that the warning issued by Washington appears to be a tactic aimed at securing congressional approval for increased funding.

"It is evident that the White House is endeavoring, through various means, to sway Congress into endorsing a bill to allocate funds. This is self-evident," remarked Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, as quoted by TASS.

"We will observe the methods the White House employs," Peskov remarked.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine, characterized by Moscow as a "special military operation," has heightened tensions between the West and Russia to levels not seen since the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. Both Moscow and Washington have cautioned against the possibility of a confrontation between NATO and Russia.

The deteriorating state of arms-control agreements, which were originally intended to mitigate the arms race during the Cold War era and reduce the likelihood of nuclear conflict, has been a source of concern for both Russia and the United States, the two primary nuclear powers.
