Shashi Tharoor calls the Uttarakhand Civil Code a "nanny state in action" and questions it

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor criticized Uttarakhand as a "nanny state" during his remarks on Thursday, highlighting concerns about the recently enacted Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill in the state, among other regulatory measures.

Tharoor expressed apprehensions about governmental intrusion into individuals' private spheres, including their bedrooms, kitchens, dining rooms, and living spaces, using the example of the BJP-led administration in Uttarakhand.

Taking to the social media platform X, Tharoor articulated, "I have long maintained that government interference should not extend to the bedroom, kitchen, dining table, or living room. However, the BJP's approach, exemplified by Uttarakhand, is quite the opposite: regulations regarding registration for live-in relationships (in the bedroom), beef prohibition (related to the kitchen and dining table), and regulations governing mini-bars (affecting the living room)."

"To witness the implementation of the 'nanny state' concept, one need only look to Uttarakhand. But for those who cherish freedom, it is imperative to vote the BJP out!" he urged.

The UCC bill, ratified by the Uttarakhand Assembly, encompasses clauses mandating the registration of live-in partnerships. Furthermore, the legislation outlaws practices like polygamy and 'halal,' which are observed within certain Muslim communities.

Nonetheless, it permits marriages to be solemnized according to the diverse customs and traditions of various religious denominations, encompassing ceremonies such as saptapadi, nikah, and anand karaj.
