Following an incident in Tamil Nadu where a Dalit woman was purportedly coerced to disembark from a state bus due to her possession of beef, a case has been registered against the bus driver and conductor under the provisions of the SC/ST Act by the Dharmapuri district police.
According to police reports, the 59-year-old woman habitually procures beef from Harur for resale in her native village. However, during her journey from Harur municipality to Krishnagiri city on Tuesday, the bus conductor purportedly objected to her carriage of beef and compelled her to alight from the bus midway.
It is alleged that despite the woman's plea to be dropped off at the subsequent bus stop, she was obliged to disembark at an unsafe location.
Following the incident, the woman lodged a complaint with the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) and the police, alleging discrimination based on her caste by the bus driver and conductor.
Furthermore, the woman asserted that the conductor had been harassing her for the past six months.
In response to the complaint, the TNSTC suspended the bus driver and conductor from their duties pending a thorough investigation into the matter.
