The 'transparent party', Trinamool, is going to take action against its leaders. Motherta Banerjee | Key elements

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing critique against the BJP regarding the Sandeshkhali violence controversy, emphasizing that her party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), stands as a paragon of transparency and accountability, ready to take action against its leaders when necessary. She questioned the BJP's efficacy in addressing the issue, labeling the party as "ineffectual."

Banerjee's remarks came amidst the backdrop of BJP leader and West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari facing obstruction from police when attempting to visit Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district, which witnessed protests over allegations of sexual abuse by local TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his cohorts.

Fresh restrictions were enforced in several areas of Sandeshkhali ahead of Adhikari's visit, invoking Section 144 of the CrPC to prevent gatherings. Despite these impediments, Adhikari managed to gain entry to Sandeshkhali following the intervention of the Calcutta High Court.

Adhikari, upon being denied access initially, criticized the police's actions, highlighting the importance of the judiciary and threatening legal recourse if necessary. The Calcutta High Court eventually permitted his visit, with strict instructions against incendiary rhetoric or unlawful activities.

Banerjee assured that camps have been established for Sandeshkhali victims to register complaints, reiterating her disdain for the BJP and questioning its response to allegations against its leaders, including Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. She also criticized the BJP's selective engagement with issues, contrasting its attention to West Bengal with its alleged neglect of similar incidents in other states.

The National Commission for Women (NCW), led by chairperson Rekha Sharma, visited Sandeshkhali, where victims shared harrowing experiences, prompting calls for President's Rule in West Bengal. The TMC rebuked the NCW's stance, accusing it of echoing BJP's agenda.

The Calcutta High Court's decision to grant Adhikari permission to visit Sandeshkhali was accompanied by appeals for peace visits to the area and the establishment of a peace home for victims on Raj Bhavan premises.

Meanwhile, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur criticized the West Bengal government for purportedly curtailing press freedom amidst the Sandeshkhali unrest, condemning its failure to address crimes against women.

The Sandeshkhali issue revolves around allegations of land-grabbing and sexual assault against Sheikh Shahjahan and his associates, with two aides already arrested on charges of gang rape and attempted murder. Sheikh remains at large since January 5, following a raid by the Enforcement Directorate.
