Two years of war have cost Ukraine much, as help decreases and Russia advances

As Ukraine commemorates the second anniversary of Russia's extensive invasion on Saturday, the country finds itself in a state of vulnerability unparalleled since the onset of Europe's deadliest conflict since World War Two.

In a surprising turn of events following Russia's massive military incursion, Ukraine's population of 40 million demonstrated remarkable defiance, thwarting the Kremlin's ambitious plans and successfully repelling the formidable adversary as Russian forces advanced toward Kyiv. However, as the conflict enters its third year, Ukraine's resilience faces formidable challenges.

Despite initial international support and military assistance, the flow of aid and supplies to Ukraine has dwindled, significantly impacting the dynamics on the battlefield. Kyiv's summer counteroffensive faltered, allowing Moscow to make incremental territorial gains.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy continues to rally Western support and has convened discussions with Western leaders to address critical issues such as security guarantees and sanctions against Russia. However, political gridlock in Washington has stalled $61 billion in aid earmarked for Ukraine, raising concerns about sustained support in the future, especially with the looming uncertainty of potential shifts in US leadership and policy towards Ukraine after the upcoming 2024 elections.

Despite facing significant challenges, Zelenskyy remains resolute, bolstered by the support of Western allies and his unwavering determination to defend Ukraine's sovereignty. Nevertheless, the toll of the conflict continues to mount, with thousands of casualties on both sides and widespread devastation across Ukraine.

As Ukraine grapples with the staggering economic and humanitarian costs of the conflict, rebuilding efforts are estimated to require nearly $500 billion. The country's infrastructure lies in ruins, with millions displaced and the economy on the brink of collapse.

While Russia has weathered the storm of unprecedented sanctions thus far, the economic toll is becoming increasingly evident, with potential stagnation or recession looming on the horizon. Nonetheless, Putin remains entrenched in power, buoyed by broad support for his leadership and the war, which the Kremlin portrays as a "special military operation" aimed at safeguarding Russia's interests.

Amidst the ongoing conflict, dissent within Russia has been swiftly quashed, with Putin's staunchest critic, Alexei Navalny, meeting a tragic end in custody. Despite the challenges and sacrifices, Putin continues to rally Russian troops, commemorating their efforts as a noble struggle for "truth and justice."

As Ukraine stands at a crossroads, the path to peace and stability remains fraught with uncertainty, with the outcome of the conflict hanging in the balance amidst geopolitical complexities and escalating tensions between East and West.
