Within 15 minutes of waking up, 84% of Indian smartphone users check their phones: Report

As per a report from the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), a significant revelation surfaces: approximately 84% of smartphone users in India tend to check their devices within 15 minutes of awakening. Additionally, the report divulges that roughly 31% of individuals' waking hours are consumed by smartphone activities, with an average of 80 device checks per day.

Entitled 'Reimagining Smartphone Experience: How 'Surfaces' can play a key role in making the phone smarter', the report underscores that half of smartphone usage is habitual rather than driven by necessity.

Moreover, it underscores the evolving landscape of smartphone utilization, illustrating a notable shift over the years. Initially, in 2010, social interaction dominated phone usage, accounting for 100% of the time spent. However, by 2023, this figure dwindled to a modest 20-25%, with streaming content, socializing, searching, gaming, shopping, online transactions, and news consumption occupying the hierarchy of smartphone activities.

Interestingly, individuals aged 18-24 exhibit a penchant for short-form video platforms like Instagram Reels and YouTube shorts compared to their older counterparts.

Additionally, the report underscores the growing indispensability of smartphones, asserting their significance surpasses conventional items such as keys or wallets in daily life.

Furthermore, the report delves into India's digital landscape, highlighting that for a vast portion of the populace, mobile phones served as the primary gateway to the internet due to their affordability and the widespread availability of inexpensive data plans, rendering desktops obsolete in this context.
