Bedridden mother, eighty-two, discovered in Tripura living with the body of her dead son

Police reported on Sunday that an 82-year-old woman, confined to her bed due to health issues, was discovered residing in a house in Agartala alongside the body of her deceased son for eight days.

The distressing incident unfolded in the Shivnagar area of the city, prompting widespread shock and concern among locals.

Identified as Kalyani Sur Chowdhury, the elderly woman had been residing with her son, Sudhir, aged 54, following the departure of her daughter-in-law from the household approximately three years ago due to a family dispute.

Upon detecting a pungent odor emanating from the residence, concerned neighbors promptly alerted the authorities.

"At 3 pm, in the presence of an executive magistrate, we forced entry into the premises and discovered the man's remains on his bed," stated Mrinal Paul, the officer-in-charge (OC) of the Maharagang Bazar police outpost.

The paralyzed woman was safely transported to a nearby healthcare facility, as she had been occupying a separate room within the dwelling, clarified Paul.

Upon inspection, numerous empty alcohol bottles were recovered from the room housing the deceased, indicating a possible association between alcohol consumption and the tragic event.

"Initial observations suggest no signs of physical trauma on the body. Our preliminary theory posits that the man, who was grappling with mental instability stemming from marital discord, succumbed to excessive alcohol consumption. A comprehensive investigation into the matter has been initiated," elaborated Paul.
