Cyclone "Gamane" in Madagascar kills at least 18 people and uproots thousands more

Tropical cyclone Gamane wreaked havoc across the island of Madagascar, resulting in significant casualties and displacement of thousands of people. According to the National Bureau of Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC), at least 18 individuals lost their lives, while more than 20,000 people were forced to flee their homes due to the cyclone's impact.

Gamane made landfall in the northeast of Madagascar with powerful winds, causing widespread destruction and flooding in many areas. The cyclone's average winds reached 150 km per hour, with gusts up to 210 km per hour. As a result of the severe weather conditions, roads and bridges collapsed in the northern regions of the island.

The disaster management office reported that three people were injured, and four others were still missing as of their latest update. While the cyclone gradually dissipated on Thursday afternoon, its aftermath continued to pose challenges, with heavy rainfall contributing to flooding in various localities.

The images shared by the disaster management office illustrate the extent of the devastation, with personnel assisting residents in retrieving belongings from flooded homes. This cyclone marks the beginning of Madagascar's cyclone and storm season for the year.

The impact of tropical cyclones on Madagascar underscores the vulnerability of communities to natural disasters in the region. Efforts to mitigate the effects of such events and support affected populations remain crucial in ensuring their safety and well-being.
