Fact-finding team after Sandeshkhali visit: Some people still threatening locals

A comprehensive fact-finding team, composed of a former judge, a bureaucrat, and representatives from civil society, conducted an investigative visit to various villages in West Bengal's Sandeshkhali on Sunday. During their visit, they engaged with numerous residents who have leveled accusations against former local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders, notably Sheikh Shahjahan, citing instances of sexual misconduct and encroachment upon land.

Following their interactions, Raj Pal Singh, a member of the team, revealed that despite the apprehension of Shahjahan in connection with the allegations, a total of 11 individuals continued to intimidate the local populace. "We have compiled a dossier containing detailed information on these individuals who persist in harassing women, despite the arrest of some perpetrators," Singh conveyed during a press briefing.

Meanwhile, Justice L Narasimha Reddy voiced concerns over the perceived complicity of the local administration in shielding Shahjahan from legal consequences. "With each passing day, additional revelations surface. Despite the intervention of the High Court leading to Shahjahan's apprehension, he was portrayed in a triumphant light even after his arrest, implying a degree of protectionism extended by the state authorities and law enforcement agencies," Justice Reddy remarked.

Moreover, the fact-finding team affirmed its intent to furnish a comprehensive report of its findings to President Draupadi Murmu, the Union Home Ministry, and the state Governor CV Ananda Bose. "We have already submitted a preliminary report to the Governor of West Bengal, and our final report will be forwarded to the President of India, the Home Ministry, and, if amenable, to the Chief Minister of West Bengal," Justice Reddy elucidated.

After the fact-finding team's assessment, representatives from India Today TV conversed with several women who proactively submitted complaint letters detailing instances of land usurpation and other transgressions. Expressing apprehension for their safety, these women fervently demanded police protection and emphasized the importance of stringent punishment for Shahjahan and his accomplices.

One woman, expressing relief at Shahjahan's arrest, conveyed her hope for reclaiming her land while underscoring the continued necessity for protection against potential retribution. Another woman echoed similar sentiments, stressing the imperative of imposing severe penalties on Shahjahan to prevent a recurrence of his alleged atrocities once he regains freedom.

The Sandeshkhali village, situated in West Bengal's 24 North Parganas district, has become embroiled in controversy following revelations of systemic sexual exploitation and land encroachment attributed to Sheikh Shahjahan and his associates, sparking widespread outrage and demands for justice.
