For the next ten or even two years, political stability will be guaranteed in India: Jaishankar

Speaking at the Nikkei Forum on India-Japan Special Strategic Partnership, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed optimism regarding the political landscape in India, asserting the likelihood of a stable government for a prolonged period, potentially extending up to 15 years or even beyond. He underscored the pivotal role of enduring political stability in facilitating the formulation and implementation of "bold" decisions by the government.

Jaishankar's remarks were prompted by a query concerning the state of political stability in India and its potential impact on foreign policy, particularly in light of the upcoming general elections slated for May, wherein over 950 million citizens are poised to exercise their electoral rights.

Asserting confidence in the durability of stable governance, Jaishankar emphasized the significance of a reform-oriented and forward-thinking leadership, buttressed by robust political backing manifested through parliamentary majority. Such a conducive environment, he noted, fosters a climate conducive to making decisive policy choices, which is pivotal for national progress.

Furthermore, Jaishankar emphasized that political stability translates into policy consistency, a crucial factor for investors evaluating long-term prospects in India. The assurance of a predictable political environment, he noted, instills confidence among both domestic and foreign investors, thereby facilitating economic growth and development.

Reflecting on India's recent political history, Jaishankar highlighted the synergy between visionary leadership and strong political mandates, citing instances where previously contentious decisions found resolution due to conducive political conditions. This, he suggested, has been instrumental in shaping India's trajectory over the past decade and is poised to continue in the foreseeable future.

Jaishankar's visit to Japan from March 6-8 aims to bolster bilateral ties and chart a course for future collaboration between the two nations. His engagements include the 16th India-Japan Foreign Minister's Strategic Dialogue and participation in the inaugural Raisina Roundtable, aimed at enhancing track two exchanges between India and Japan.
