Himanta Sarma advises Muslim MP to marry again, citing surveys that support the prohibition on polygamy

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made a satirical remark directed at Lok Sabha MP and AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal, suggesting that if Ajmal desires to take additional wives, he should do so before the Lok Sabha elections. Sarma indicated that the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Assam after the elections would render polygamy illegal.

Sarma quipped, "He should get married now. After the elections, the UCC will come to Assam, then there will be arrests. So it’s okay if he gets married before the election... As far as I know, he has one wife. He can marry a second or third but after the elections, we will stop polygamy."

The Chief Minister also humorously mentioned that if invited to Ajmal's wedding before the elections, he would attend as it would still be legal. However, he emphasized that after the elections, polygamy would be deemed illegal.

This comment comes amidst a broader discourse on polygamy and the implementation of the UCC in Assam. Previously, Ajmal had advocated for raising awareness against polygamy rather than imposing a ban. However, Sarma's government has taken steps to crack down on practices like child marriage and polygamy, particularly targeting elder men marrying multiple times, often with young girls from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
