If elected president, Donald Trump will release the "hostages" of the US Capitol Hill riots

Former US President Donald Trump has declared his intention to take several actions if he were to be re-elected to office, including closing the border between the US and Mexico and releasing suspects connected to the January 6, 2021, Capitol riots.

Trump, who is 77 years old and a member of the Republican Party, has emphasized his commitment to cracking down on illegal immigration, a key focus of his administration during his first term from 2016 to 2020. During that time, his administration implemented various measures, including the construction of new barriers along the US-Mexico border.

In a statement posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump outlined his priorities for a potential second term, stating, "My first acts as your next president will be to close the border, DRILL, BABY, DRILL, and free the January 6 hostages being wrongfully imprisoned!"

The January 6, 2021, Capitol riots occurred when thousands of individuals stormed the US Capitol following a speech by Trump, during which he falsely claimed that the 2020 presidential election, won by Democrat Joe Biden, was fraudulent. Numerous individuals have since been arrested and charged with offenses related to rioting, unlawful behavior, and misconduct during the events of that day.

Additionally, the US Supreme Court has scheduled April 25 as the date to hear Trump's claim of presidential immunity from prosecution concerning charges related to his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Trump, who is poised to become the Republican nominee to challenge Biden in the upcoming November 5 election, has pleaded not guilty to conspiracy charges associated with his actions leading up to the Capitol riots.
