"In Srinagar, PM Modi told me that your hard work had paid off," said the BJP leader

Mohammad Ashraf Hajam, also known as 'Azad,' who is recognized as the first Muslim leader from Jammu and Kashmir to align with the BJP, portrays himself as a longstanding acquaintance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a devoted advocate for the nation. Reflecting on their initial encounter during the 1992 tricolour-hoisting ceremony at Srinagar's Lal Chowk amid the peak of militancy, Azad reminisces about Modi's steadfast presence amidst the turmoil in Jammu and Kashmir during the 1990s.

During an exclusive interview with Aaj Tak TV/India Today TV, Azad recounts how Modi ventured extensively across Jammu and Kashmir despite the prevalent violence. He reminisces about the tense atmosphere in his village in Budgam, referred to as a "mini-Pakistan," during the height of militancy, highlighting the significance of the BJP's determination to hoist the Indian flag in Srinagar's Lal Chowk despite the adversities.

Azad's association with BJP stalwarts like Murli Manohar Joshi and Narendra Modi originated from this event, where he distinctly recalls Modi's determination and compassion towards the locals. Inspired by Modi's commitment, Azad pledged his allegiance to serve the country and the BJP, lauding the party as inherently patriotic.

He recounts Modi's words, expressing a heartfelt desire to address the challenges faced by the youth, which further solidified Azad's resolve to join the BJP. Reflecting on Modi's recent visit to Jammu and Kashmir, Azad recalls being acknowledged by the Prime Minister as an 'old friend,' signifying the enduring bond between them.

Azad also reminisces about Modi's past interactions, including inquiries about his well-being and family during his visit to Jammu and Kashmir in 2018. Expressing gratitude for Modi's recognition and praise during his recent visit, Azad acknowledges the unexpected turns of fate that led to his alignment with the BJP and Modi's ascendancy to the Prime Ministership.

Regarding the BJP's alliance with the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Jammu and Kashmir, Azad emphasizes his unwavering dedication to the party's objectives and willingness to assume any responsibilities entrusted to him.

Dispelling any associations with militancy, Azad affirms his commitment to peaceful political engagement, contrasting it with the climate of fear prevalent during the 1990s. Reflecting on the developments in Jammu and Kashmir post the revocation of Article 370, Azad praises Modi's efforts and highlights his popularity among the Kashmiri populace.

Buoyed by his optimism, Azad expresses confidence in the BJP's prospects in Jammu and Kashmir, anticipating a favorable outcome in the forthcoming assembly polls mandated by the Supreme Court.
