Income Tax notification for Rs. 11 crore payable is received by the Communist Party of India: Report

The Communist Party of India (CPI) has reportedly received a notice from the income-tax department, demanding payment of dues amounting to Rs 11 crore. This notice pertains to the use of an old PAN card while filing tax returns over the past few years. Sources suggest that the dues include penalties and interest due to discrepancies related to the use of the old PAN card.

The CPI is said to be seeking legal assistance and consulting its lawyers to challenge the notice issued by the tax authorities.

This development comes in the wake of similar notices received by other political parties. The Congress, for instance, has stated that it received notices demanding payment of dues exceeding Rs 1,823 crore for discrepancies in tax returns filed in previous years. Additionally, Trinamool Congress leader Saket Gokhale has claimed to have received 11 such notices from the income-tax department within the last 72 hours.

The opposition, particularly the Congress, has been vocal in alleging that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government is attempting to weaken opposition parties in the lead-up to the Lok Sabha elections.
