"Invested in addressing foreign policy, not social media": S. Jaishankar on digital storytelling

Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar emphasized his role in shaping India's foreign policy rather than engaging with narratives on social media platforms. Speaking at the India Today Conclave 2024, Jaishankar acknowledged the evolving nature of social media and admitted to adapting expressions over time to enhance India's presence on these platforms.

"I am paid to fix foreign policy. I am not paid to fix social media. Honestly, nobody can fix social media. The nature of the platform is such that everything that you somewhat disapprovingly state gets more eyeballs on social media," remarked Jaishankar during the discussion on 'India’s Role in an Uncertain World: The Post G-20 Order'.

When questioned about countering false narratives on social media and addressing biases against India, Jaishankar highlighted the challenge posed by the angular nature of social media and the need for quick responses to tweets and posts.

Regarding changes in the language used by the Ministry of External Affairs and his active presence on social media, Jaishankar explained the necessity of adapting to the demands of the medium. He emphasized the importance of utilizing social media to effectively communicate India's position and strategy in international affairs.

"Since I cannot change the nature of social media, I have to communicate, ideally, recognizing it but if I could, utilize it, so I can get ahead in the game," Jaishankar concluded.
