JP Nadda steps down as the MP for Himachal Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha

Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) national president, Jagat Prakash Nadda, took the decision on Monday to tender his resignation as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha representing Himachal Pradesh. This decision comes in the wake of his recent uncontested election to the Upper House from Gujarat. Nadda's departure marks the conclusion of the tenure of 57 Rajya Sabha MPs, scheduled to conclude in April 2024.

According to an official communication from the Rajya Sabha, "Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, an elected member of the Council of States (Rajya Sabha), representing the State of Himachal Pradesh, resigned his seat in the Rajya Sabha and his resignation has been accepted by the Chairman, Rajya Sabha w.e.f 4th March 2024."

A native of Himachal Pradesh, JP Nadda has been a stalwart representative of the state in the Rajya Sabha since 2012. His departure has paved the way for a fresh election to fill the vacant seat from Himachal Pradesh, with the ballot eventually resulting in a riveting conclusion.

In a tightly contested race for the vacant seat, BJP's Harsh Mahajan emerged victorious after a dramatic tie with Congress's Abhishek Manu Singhvi, culminating in a draw of lots. Mahajan clinched the victory as both candidates secured an equal number of votes, 34 each, leading to a tie-breaking draw of lots.
