Mamata Banerjee says, "I don't do dynasty politics," and then disowns her brother

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has decided to sever ties with her younger brother, Swapan Banerjee, following his opposition to the Trinamool Congress's nomination of Prasun Banerjee for the Howrah Lok Sabha seat.

Expressing her displeasure with Swapan Banerjee's comments, Mamata Banerjee stated, "As people grow older, their greed also increases. There are a total of 32 people in our family. I do not consider him a member of his family. From today onwards, no one will introduce him as my brother." She further declared her decision to completely disown him, emphasizing that Prasun Banerjee, an Arjuna Award winner and the Trinamool Congress candidate, is the party's nominee for the seat.

Swapan Banerjee, also known as Babun Banerjee, expressed his dissatisfaction with the Trinamool Congress's choice of candidate for the Howrah Lok Sabha seat, stating that Prasun Banerjee was not the right choice and that many capable candidates were overlooked. Despite his discontent, Swapan Banerjee denied rumors of joining the BJP, affirming his support for his sister and labeling reports of his BJP affiliation as false.

Prasun Banerjee, a former footballer and two-time Trinamool Congress MP from the Howrah seat, is among the 42 Trinamool Congress candidates fielded for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. The party has introduced new faces for various constituencies, including former Indian cricketers Yusuf Pathan and Kirti Azad, as well as actor Rachana Banerjee while dropping sitting MPs like actor Nusrat Jahan. Mahua Moitra, who was expelled from the Lok Sabha in the cash-for-query case, has been fielded from her former constituency, Krishnanagar.

Mamata Banerjee's decision to break ties with her brother underscores the internal strife within the Trinamool Congress, highlighting the challenges faced by the party ahead of the upcoming elections.
