Manipur's top Congressman quits the party, citing lack of faith

Former Manipur minister Irengbam Hemochandra Singh announced his resignation from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress on Sunday, along with relinquishing all other positions he held within the Pradesh Congress Committee.

Hemochandra Singh submitted his resignation to Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee president K. Meghachandra, citing his loss of faith and confidence in the party's leadership.

In his statement, he clarified that he has no intention of joining any other political party. Rather, he stated that his decision to resign was aimed at freeing himself to speak openly and advocate for the concerns of his constituents without constraints.

During a press conference at the Manipur Press Club, Hemochandra Singh expressed his disappointment with the Congress party, characterizing it as being in a state of decline and lacking a clear vision for the future.

He emphasized that his decision to leave the party was not motivated by a desire for personal gain or aspirations for elected office, refuting speculation that his resignation was due to dissatisfaction over not receiving a party ticket for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Instead, Hemochandra Singh highlighted broader concerns about the party's direction and its ability to address pressing issues facing the state of Manipur. He particularly pointed to the recent inter-communal violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities as a significant challenge that requires urgent attention and leadership.

Having served as the Speaker of the Manipur Assembly, as well as holding ministerial positions and representing the Singjamei Assembly constituency, Hemochandra Singh's departure from the Congress represents a notable development in Manipur's political landscape.
