"More significant than figures": Akali Dal on the BJP's decision to go it alone in Punjab

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal criticized the national parties for prioritizing political gains over principles amidst the BJP's decision to contest the Lok Sabha elections in Punjab independently. Badal emphasized that for SAD, principles hold more significance than mere electoral calculations, highlighting the party's commitment to safeguarding the community, and Punjab's interests, and fostering harmony within the state.

Asserting that SAD is rooted in principles and not merely focused on attaining power, Badal accused Delhi-based national parties of indulging in vote-centric politics, contrasting SAD's focus on Punjab's welfare. He reiterated the recent decisions taken by the party's core committee, emphasizing their adherence to principled stances.

The announcement of BJP's decision to contest solo came from Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar, who cited feedback from various quarters, including citizens, party members, and leaders, as the basis for the move. This decision diverged from earlier indications of a potential alliance, notably mentioned by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and former BJP national chief Shah.

SAD's indication of continuing independently in the elections was apparent after its core committee meeting, wherein a resolution underscored the party's commitment to principles, including the demand for the release of Sikh prisoners and advocacy for farmers' rights.
