"Never rendered politically slanted rulings": Former High Court judge set to join BJP

Abhijit Gangopadhyay tendered his resignation as a judge of the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, subsequently announcing his decision to embark on a political journey by joining the BJP. This move drew swift criticism from the ruling Trinamool Congress, which raised concerns regarding his impartiality as a judge. In an exclusive interview with India Today TV, Gangopadhyay delved into the factors motivating his foray into politics and addressed the allegations leveled against him.

Gangopadhyay emphasized that his decision to enter politics does not implicate any moral impropriety, asserting that he refrained from engaging in political activities while serving as a judge. He maintained that his judicial decisions were consistently based on the presented facts and devoid of any political bias. Addressing accusations of corruption, he reaffirmed his commitment to integrity by advocating for thorough investigations into any allegations of malfeasance, irrespective of political affiliations.

Reflecting on his contentious interactions with Trinamool Congress leaders, Gangopadhyay expressed bewilderment over their sudden scrutiny of his political leanings, particularly in light of their prior acceptance of his judicial authority without questioning his impartiality. He suggested that such criticisms were merely distractions aimed at diverting attention from genuine concerns about corruption.

During the interview, Gangopadhyay disclosed that he had never harbored intentions of joining any political party initially. However, as invitations to enter the political arena surfaced amid ongoing challenges, he seized the opportunity to engage in public service proactively.

Regarding his transition from the judiciary to politics, Gangopadhyay recounted a brief period of deliberation, during which the BJP approached him through mutual acquaintances. Following initial discussions, he made the decision to resign, marking the onset of his political journey after a series of consultations spanning a few days.
