"Not your puppets": Taiwan protests to an interview with Indian media, while China objects

The Chinese embassy in India has issued a statement expressing objection to an Indian media channel's interview with Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu, alleging that this interview "provided a platform for him to advocate 'Taiwan independence'". In response, Taipei highlighted that both India and Taiwan are democratic nations with independent and vigorous media outlets.

It's important to note that India adheres to the ‘One China policy’ regarding Taiwan and maintains no formal diplomatic relations with Taipei.

According to the statement issued by the Chinese embassy, "On 29th February 2024, certain Indian TV broadcasted an interview with the head of Taiwan's foreign affairs office Joseph Wu, which provided a platform for him to advocate 'Taiwan independence' and disseminate false information. It seriously violated the one-China principle, and is totally unacceptable."

The embassy defined the "One-China principle" as "There is only one China in the world, Taiwan is part of China, and the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China."

In response to the Chinese embassy's statement, Taiwan's foreign ministry emphasized, "Neither India nor Taiwan is part of the PRC [People's Republic of China] and we're not its puppets. We're both democracies with free and vibrant presses that can't be dictated to."

Taipei urged Beijing to focus on its "economic challenges" instead of intimidating its neighboring countries.
