On March 6, PM Modi will launch India's first underwater metro service in Kolkata

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate India's inaugural under-river metro tunnel constructed in Kolkata on March 6. Situated beneath the Hooghly River, this tunnel forms a crucial segment of the Kolkata Metro's East-West Metro corridor, linking Howrah Maidan to Esplanade.

In addition to this milestone event, PM Modi will also inaugurate the Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay and Taratala-Majerhat sections of the Kolkata metro on the same day. These newly operational sections are envisioned to alleviate road congestion and offer seamless, convenient, and comfortable transit options to commuters.

Distinguished by its distinction as the first transportation tunnel beneath a formidable river in India, the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade metro line boasts the deepest metro station in the country at Howrah Metro Station, plunging 33 meters below the surface.

Anticipated to traverse a 520-meter distance beneath the river Hooghly in a mere 45 seconds, the metro's efficiency is poised to redefine urban mobility. Moreover, the Majerhat Metro Station stands out as an elevated structure, featuring a canal within its premises.

Kaushik Mitra, the Chief Public Relations Officer of Kolkata Metro Railway, expressed, "This inauguration signifies a momentous gift from our Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the populace of Kolkata, fulfilling a long-cherished aspiration."

In conjunction with this landmark event, PM Modi will also lay the foundation stone for the extension of Phase 1 of the Pune Metro Rail project connecting the Pimpri-Chinchwad Metro to Nigdi.

Sources within the Eastern Railway reveal that PM Modi's itinerary for March 6 encompasses the inauguration and commencement of several connectivity initiatives valued at Rs 15,400 crores in Kolkata. Additionally, the Prime Minister is slated to embark on a visit to Bihar on the same day.
