In a gesture of goodwill, India has extended a special provision to grant eligibility for Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards to 7th-generation Indian-origin Mauritians, announced President Droupadi Murmu during her address at the State Banquet hosted by Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth. Additionally, President Murmu unveiled India's commitment to support the Government of Mauritius in the redevelopment of the sacred Ganga Talao complex, aiming to transform it into a hub for religious, cultural, and tourist activities.
The decision to facilitate OCI card eligibility for 7th-generation Indian-origin Mauritians underscores India's reverence for shared cultural values, as emphasized by President Murmu. Ganga Talao, located in the heart of Mauritius, holds immense significance as the most sacred Hindu site in the country, further reinforcing the cultural ties between India and Mauritius.
President Murmu expressed confidence that this collaborative effort would strengthen the enduring people-to-people connections between the two nations. Moreover, she highlighted recent bilateral initiatives such as the launch of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and RuPay Card settlement systems, along with the inauguration of infrastructure projects and the provision of essential services like affordable medicines.
Acknowledging the pivotal role of Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth in nurturing the special partnership between India and Mauritius, President Murmu affirmed India's commitment to supporting Mauritius on its path to development and prosperity. As India embarks on its journey towards becoming a developed nation and a global leader, President Murmu reiterated India's steadfast commitment to fostering peace and shared prosperity, guided by the principles of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one family) and Sarvajana Sukhina Bhavantu (may all beings be happy).
President Murmu expressed her delight at being invited as the Chief Guest for the 56th National Day celebrations of Mauritius, praising the country's remarkable achievements in development, democracy, diversity, and dynamism. She paid tribute to the resilience and perseverance of Mauritians, particularly the descendants of Indian indentured laborers, who played a pivotal role in shaping the nation's identity and progress.
Highlighting the enduring bond between India and Mauritius, President Murmu emphasized their intertwined histories, shared aspirations, and mutual support across various endeavors. She underscored the significance of 12th March, commemorating Mauritius' Independence Day and paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi, whose ideals continue to inspire both nations.
President Murmu concluded her address with a heartfelt prayer for the continued prosperity and flourishing of the special relationship between India and Mauritius, symbolized by the raising of the Mauritian flag alongside the Indian Tricolour at Champs de Mars during the National Day celebrations.
