Protesting farmers from Punjab are gearing up for a significant event today as they prepare to hold a mahapanchayat at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi. Organized under the banner of Samyukt Kisan Morcha, the farmers plan to march from Uchana to Jind before convening at the Mahapanchayat to demonstrate their strength and opposition against the Modi government's policies.
The Mahapanchayat aims to adopt a Sankalp Patra or Letter of Resolution, outlining their commitment to intensify the fight against what they perceive as pro-corporate, communal, and dictatorial policies of the government. Key demands include legislation on minimum support price (MSP) for crops and complete loan waivers for all farmers.
Preparations for the Mahapanchayat are underway to ensure massive participation and make the event politically significant. Leaders from 37 farmer organizations will be in attendance, with approximately 400 organizations expected to participate. Activists from 13 districts across all three regions have traveled to Delhi, where they will be accommodated in various gurdwaras.
Permission has been granted for the gathering under the condition that farmers refrain from bringing tractors or weapons. In Noida, security measures have been heightened by the traffic police in anticipation of the Mahapanchayat.
The Samyukta Kisan Morcha obtained a no-objection certificate from the Delhi Police and municipal corporation for the gathering, reaffirming their commitment to peaceful protest. Since February 13, farmers have been assembling and camping at multiple border points around Delhi, demanding legislation guaranteeing MSP and withdrawal of police cases against protesters.
During recent talks, the government offered to procure five crops at MSP for five years through central agencies, but the proposal was rejected by the farmers. The protest continues as farmers remain steadfast in their demands, camping at border points of Punjab and Haryana to press for action from the Centre.
