Remarks made by the US on Arvind Kejriwal days after Germany's remark annoy India

The US government responded to the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by stating that they are "closely monitoring" the situation and advocating for a "fair, transparent, and timely legal process" for him. A spokesperson from the US State Department emphasized the importance of upholding the principles of justice and democracy in Kejriwal's case.

This statement from the US government follows India's summoning of a senior diplomat from the German Embassy to express its disapproval of Germany's comments on Kejriwal's arrest. Germany's foreign affairs spokesperson had expressed hope for adherence to judicial independence and democratic principles in Kejriwal's legal proceedings.

The US State Department's response underscores the significance of fair treatment and the presumption of innocence for individuals facing legal accusations. They declined to comment on India's protest to Germany, directing inquiries to the German Foreign Ministry instead.

Arvind Kejriwal, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party, was arrested on March 21 by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case, which involves allegations of corruption and money laundering related to the formulation and implementation of the Delhi government's excise policy for 2021-22. Kejriwal has maintained his innocence, while his party has criticized his arrest as a politically motivated move by the ruling BJP ahead of the general elections.
