Row sparked by Trinamool candidate's comments about central forces and poll body

Prasun Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress's candidate for the Malda North Lok Sabha seat, sparked controversy with his remarks cautioning the central forces and the Election Commission against any perceived acts of intimidation during the electoral process.

Speaking at a rally in Malda, Banerjee, a former IPS officer, issued a stern message, urging the Border Security Force (BSF) and other paramilitary forces to adhere strictly to the confines of the law. Emphasizing the paramountcy of free and fair elections, he asserted his presence as a deterrent against any undue coercion, stating, "I am here if paramilitary forces attempt to intimidate."

Furthermore, Banerjee underscored the importance of giving due respect to Election Commission officials, advocating for their proper treatment and accommodation during the electoral proceedings. However, his tone turned somewhat threatening as he asserted his authority, suggesting that his mere presence would suffice to address any concerns, thereby rendering the use of boots or firearms redundant.

Concluding with the rallying cry of 'khela hobe' (the game is on), Banerjee encapsulated the combative spirit pervading the electoral arena in West Bengal.

In response, the BJP's IT cell head, Amit Malviya, seized upon Banerjee's remarks, sharing a video clip of the speech on social media and condemning his actions. Malviya criticized Banerjee's transition from the IPS to political candidacy under the Trinamool Congress banner, insinuating that his conduct as a police officer had been questionable.

Earlier in the month, Banerjee had opted for voluntary retirement from the IPS, having served as the Inspector General of Police for the Raiganj Range. Beyond his law enforcement career, Banerjee enjoys renown as a prominent theatre actor within the state of West Bengal.
