S Jaishankar delivers PM Modi's private letter after meeting with Shinzo Abe's wife

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, in a significant encounter on Friday, met with Akie Abe, the esteemed spouse of Japan's late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, reflecting on the impactful legacy left by the late premier in fostering the bilateral ties between India and Japan.

The encounter holds poignant significance as it follows the tragic passing of Shinzo Abe, who succumbed to injuries sustained from a shooting incident during an election campaign speech in Nara, Japan, on July 8, 2022.

Reflecting on this meeting, Minister Jaishankar shared his sentiments on a designated platform, where he underscored the profound contributions of PM Shinzo Abe in fortifying the bond between India and Japan.

Moreover, Minister Jaishankar extended a gesture of empathy and solidarity by presenting a personal letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, conveying condolences on the recent loss of Mrs. Yoko Abe, the mother of the late Prime Minister.

Shinzo Abe, renowned as Japan's longest-serving prime minister, held office from 2006 to 2007 and then again from 2012 to 2020. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a deeply emotional tribute following Abe's demise, hailed him as an exceptional leader whose absence left a void not only in Japan but also in the global arena, emphasizing the personal loss felt due to their close friendship.

Abe's unwavering commitment to bolstering strategic cooperation with India was evident throughout his tenure. He spearheaded pivotal initiatives such as the bilateral civil nuclear deal and key trade agreements, demonstrating a steadfast dedication to nurturing the relationship between the two nations.

Additionally, Abe played a pivotal role in overcoming obstacles to the India-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IJCEPA), a landmark pact signed on February 16, 2011, which came into effect on August 1, 2011. This agreement stands as a testament to the depth and breadth of India's diplomatic engagements on the international stage.
