S. Jaishankar on relations with North American nations: It is unfair to combine the United States and Canada

At the India Today Conclave 2024, Union Foreign Minister S Jaishankar addressed concerns regarding India's ties with North American countries on the Khalistani issue, emphasizing the need to distinguish between the US and Canada.

Jaishankar highlighted differences in the political landscapes of the two nations, particularly regarding the handling of violent extremist views and activities. He noted that while American politics has not provided space for such activities to the same extent as Canada, it would be unfair to lump the two countries together.

Regarding allegations raised by both countries, including the US accusation of an Indian government agency employee directing a plot to murder Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, Jaishankar mentioned India's response. He stated that India set up a high-powered committee to investigate the alleged plot, acknowledging the organized crime aspect of the case.

Jaishankar's remarks followed comments by US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, who emphasized the continued strength of the US-India relationship despite the case. Garcetti described how both sides addressed the issue as good friends, highlighting the ongoing acceleration of the bilateral relationship.
