Shehbaz Sharif is congratulated by Prime Minister Modi on his second term in office

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his felicitations to Shehbaz Sharif on his reappointment as the Prime Minister of Pakistan for a subsequent term, marking a noteworthy occasion in the political landscape of the neighboring nation.

In a message shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, PM Modi conveyed his warm regards, stating, "Congratulations to @CMShehbaz on his reinstallation as the Prime Minister of Pakistan."

Shehbaz Sharif, assuming office as Pakistan’s Prime Minister once again, took the oath on Monday following his successful electoral bid in a parliamentary session held a day prior.

His return to the pinnacle of power resonates with his previous tenure from April 2022 to August 2023, wherein he assumed leadership after the removal of Imran Khan, the former cricket luminary who faced ousting post a no-confidence motion. Shehbaz, part of the Sharif political dynasty, is the younger sibling of the thrice-elected premier Nawaz Sharif.

However, Shehbaz Sharif's reinstallation has been marred by controversies stemming from allegations of electoral irregularities surrounding last month's parliamentary elections, which critics claim were orchestrated in his favor.

Despite his party, the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N), falling short of securing an outright majority, Sharif brokered coalitions with other factions, facilitating his return to the premiership for a second term.

Securing 201 votes in parliament, Sharif emerged victorious in the prime ministerial contest, triumphing over his rival, Omar Ayub, who garnered 92 votes, and subsequently formalized his leadership with the swearing-in ceremony held in the capital city of Islamabad on Monday, presided over by President Arif.

Sharif's ascent to the premiership marks a significant milestone, as he becomes the 24th individual to hold the position in Pakistan's 77-year history, symbolizing a continuation of the country's enduring political trajectory.
