The BJP shared a list containing outdated seats and ignored Assam's delimitation

One day following the public disclosure of its inaugural roster featuring 195 nominees for the imminent Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took the initiative on Sunday to unveil an updated list of contenders specifically tailored for the state of Assam, encompassing necessary rectifications. The initial list, which outlined the party's intentions to contest 11 out of 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam, contained certain inaccuracies, failing to account for the recent delimitation process undergone by the state.

In a statement disseminated via the X platform alongside the publication of the revised enumeration, the party elucidated, "The list of candidates for the state of Assam has been revised to rectify discrepancies in the parliamentary constituency names and numbers."

As per the amended compilation, Dilip Saikia has been nominated to contest from Darrang Udalgiri, Amar Sing Tisso from Diphu, and Ranjit Dutta from Tezpur, among others. Notably, Suresh Bora and Kamakhya Prasad Tasa are set to vie for the Nagaon and Kaziranga constituencies respectively.

Furthermore, the revised list rectifies the inclusion of certain constituencies, such as Mangaldai and Kaliabor, which no longer serve as Lok Sabha electoral districts. Additionally, candidates were erroneously listed beside these constituencies.

In a gesture of coalition partnership, the BJP allocated two seats to the Assam Gana Parishad (AGP), a longstanding ally, while one seat was apportioned to the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), affiliated with Bodoland Territorial Region Chief Promod Boro.

Notable alterations include the nomination of Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat, replacing the incumbent MP Rameshwar Teli.

The upcoming Lok Sabha polls are poised to mark a significant electoral event in Assam, particularly following the delimitation exercise conducted by the Election Commission of India (ECI) last year.
