The poll panel warned Rahul Gandhi about PM Modi's "pickpocketing" and "panauti" remarks

Responding to a directive from the Delhi High Court issued in December of the previous year, the Election Commission has taken steps to address the conduct of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi concerning his public statements, particularly in light of his controversial remarks directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, characterized as "panauti" (bad omen) and "pickpocket" jibes.

The court's directive stemmed from Gandhi's speech on November 22, during which he referred to Prime Minister Modi as a "pickpocket," a statement deemed by the court as not being in good taste. Consequently, the Election Commission was tasked with taking appropriate action within an eight-week timeframe.

In alignment with its recent advisory concerning star campaigners and political figures during election campaigns, the Election Commission has urged Rahul Gandhi to exercise greater caution and mindfulness in his public discourse. This advisory, issued on March 1, underscored the potential consequences parties, candidates, and star campaigners may face for any breaches of the Model Code of Conduct.

Furthermore, the Election Commission reiterated that strict measures will be enforced against party campaigners and candidates who have previously received notices for violations of the model code, emphasizing the importance of adherence to ethical and lawful campaign practices.

It's worth noting that Rahul Gandhi had previously been issued a notice by the Election Commission following his use of terms like "panauti" and "pickpocket" in reference to PM Modi last year.
