Two shot dead in Missouri while serving an eviction notice; one suspect is being held

Two individuals, comprising a court employee and a police officer, tragically lost their lives on Thursday as they endeavored to serve an eviction notice at a residence in Missouri, as per authorities.

In addition to the fatalities, another officer sustained critical injuries but is anticipated to recover, according to law enforcement sources.

Independence Police Chief Adam Dustman disclosed during a news briefing held outside the Centerpoint Medical Center on Thursday afternoon that two police officers from his department encountered gunfire while responding to assist Drexel Mack, who was engaged in serving the eviction notice.

Mack, or another individual serving civil process documents, dialed 911 to report that Mack had been shot, Dustman revealed. The officers arrived at the scene around 1:10 p.m. and approached Mack to provide assistance when they came under fire, he explained.

"I'm deeply saddened to announce the loss of one of our officers," Dustman stated, identifying the fallen officer as Cody Allen, aged 35.

The second officer, whose identity was not disclosed, underwent surgery and is projected to make a recovery, Dustman confirmed. Another officer sustained minor injuries after being struck by gunfire, the police chief added.

Dustman eulogized Allen as a hero and characterized the police department as a "bereaved family" in the wake of Allen's demise.

"He always had a smile," Dustman reminisced.

A suspect believed to be involved in the shooting was apprehended and sustained minor injuries, according to Corporal Justin Ewing of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, who spoke during an earlier press briefing.

Officer Jack Taylor, a spokesperson for the Independence Police Department, indicated that no immediate details were available regarding the sequence of events preceding the onset of gunfire.

Mack, in his early 40s, had served in Jackson County's employ for more than ten years, officials disclosed.

"We are devastated that a court employee, who is a public servant, was shot by a member of the public while performing their job," lamented Presiding Judge Jalilah Otto in a statement. "Our hearts are heavy and our thoughts are with our employee, our entire Court family, and the Independence Police Department."

Late Thursday afternoon, over a dozen officers congregated outside the hospital to escort the deceased's bodies to the medical examiner's office. Emotional scenes unfolded as individuals embraced and provided solace to one another following the conclusion of the procession.

Earlier in the day, helicopter footage from KMBC-TV depicted emergency vehicles converging around a sprawling, secluded residence situated amidst a field. The surrounding landscape comprised a blend of woodlands and farmland, interspersed with residences situated on expansive lots, with a church nestled among the homes.

Kansas City Police Capt. Jake Becchina conveyed via email that tactical operations at the residence concluded by approximately 7:30 p.m. Officers conducted a thorough search of the property to ensure the safety of investigators and local residents and found no additional individuals within the premises, he affirmed.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has assumed control of the investigation.

Independence, a suburb of Kansas City boasting approximately 122,000 residents, served as the backdrop for this tragic incident.
