US adopts law mandating that ByteDance give up TikTok or risk being banned

The US House of Representatives has passed a bill requiring TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, to divest its assets or face a ban in the country. The legislation received strong bipartisan support, with 352 votes in favor and 65 against. This move marks a significant blow to the popular Chinese-owned social media platform, which has gained immense popularity globally.

Under the proposed law, TikTok would need to sell its assets to an American company if it wishes to continue operating in the US. With over 170 million users in the country, TikTok's divestment would have far-reaching implications.

China has condemned the US decision, denouncing it as "an act of bullying." The Chinese government spokesperson criticized the move, emphasizing that the US has not provided evidence of TikTok endangering national security. The spokesperson warned of potential repercussions, stating that the US actions could disrupt market operations and undermine investor confidence.

US officials have raised concerns about data security risks associated with TikTok's Chinese ownership. There are fears that the Chinese government could access user data for propaganda or misinformation purposes. The White House has clarified that the goal is to end Chinese ownership of TikTok, rather than banning the platform outright.

TikTok has voiced opposition to the bill, arguing that a ban would infringe on the freedom of expression of millions of Americans. TikTok's CEO is scheduled to engage with senators to discuss the proposed legislation further.
