US official uses an elderly woman's $100,000 funds for a new house and cosmetic surgery

An official in the US state of Florida, Orlando City Commissioner Regina Hill, has been arrested for defrauding a 96-year-old woman of her savings, totaling more than USD100,000. Hill allegedly misused the woman's power of attorney to make personal purchases, including a facelift, hotel stays, rental cars, and expensive perfumes. Additionally, she is accused of fraudulently using the woman's name to purchase a home.

Hill, a Democrat who has served as city commissioner since 2013, faces multiple charges, including exploitation of the elderly, mortgage fraud, scheme to defraud, and fraud. If convicted on all counts, she could potentially face up to 180 years in prison. Hill has pleaded not guilty and posted bond following her arrest.

The alleged exploitation came to light after a judge issued an injunction prohibiting Hill from accessing the elderly woman's bank accounts and homes, which Hill had taken control of. It was revealed that Hill met the woman in 2021 and took advantage of her cognitive disabilities and age-related health issues.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement Special Agent in Charge John Vecchio stated that Hill learned of the woman's poor living conditions and connected with her through her role as a city commissioner. Vecchio alleged that Hill used her influence to fraudulently obtain power of attorney from the elderly woman.

In response to the allegations, Hill stated that she loved and cared for the elderly woman like family and expressed confidence in the due process to prove her innocence.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis indicated that he would suspend Hill if she was indicted, emphasizing the importance of addressing exploitation cases, particularly those involving vulnerable seniors.

A hearing for Hill's case is scheduled for April 5.
