Veteran Gujarat Congressman Arjun Modhwadia resigns because he felt helpless

After four decades of dedicated service, senior Congress leader and Porbandar MLA Arjun Modhwadia tendered his resignation from the party.

On Monday, he officially submitted his resignation as the MLA to the Gujarat Vidhan Sabha speaker, marking the end of his longstanding association with the Congress.

In a heartfelt letter addressed to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Modhwadia expressed his reasons for stepping down from the party. He conveyed a sense of helplessness, lamenting his inability to effectively serve the people, particularly those in his constituency of Porbandar and the broader state of Gujarat.

Highlighting a significant point of disagreement, Modhwadia recalled his vocal dissent when the Congress leadership decided to decline the invitation for the inauguration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya on January 11.

In his missive, he emphasized the profound cultural and spiritual significance of Lord Ram, referring to him as the "Aastha of Bharat." Modhwadia criticized the party's stance, asserting that it had deeply hurt the sentiments of the people by boycotting the Mahotsav in Ayodhya, failing to accurately gauge the public sentiment.

The former MLA further criticized Rahul Gandhi's involvement in Assam, accusing him of attempting to disrupt and undermine the sanctity of the Pran Pratishta ceremony. He noted that such actions only served to provoke resentment among party members and citizens alike.

Expressing gratitude towards the party leadership and its dedicated workers for their support and affection over the past four decades, Modhwadia concluded his letter, marking the end of an era in his political journey.

Modhwadia, a former Gujarat Congress president and leader of the opposition, had secured two consecutive terms as MLA after his victory in the 2022 Assembly elections from Porbandar.
