20 laborers are being held after a 5-year-old child in Goa was sexually raped and killed

The tragic incident of a five-year-old girl being sexually assaulted and murdered in South Goa's Vasco area has deeply saddened the community. The police have confirmed that the girl was sexually assaulted and then strangulated to death. Around 20 laborers from the construction site where the body was found have been detained for questioning.

The girl's parents discovered her body behind the construction site after she had been missing for some time. They rushed her to Chicalim Sub-District Hospital, but she was declared brought dead.

The Vasco Police initiated an investigation after the victim's mother suspected that her daughter might have been raped and murdered. The post-mortem examination confirmed her worst fears.

Superintendent of Police Sunita Sawant stated that the police have detained 15 to 20 laborers for questioning and have registered a case of sexual assault and murder under relevant sections of the IPC, POCSO Act, and the Goa Children Act.

All workers present at the construction site, as well as those residing there, are being questioned in connection with the case.

Chairman of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), Priyank Kanoongo, expressed concern over the incident and issued a notice to the Goa government. He emphasized the need for strict implementation of existing laws like the POCSO Act and the Juvenile Justice Act to protect children. He stressed that while POCSO is a stringent law, effective implementation is crucial for safeguarding children.

Once a detailed report is available, further action will be determined based on the findings of the investigation.
