A US official responds to Elon Musk's statements endorsing India's permanent seat on the UNSC

The United States reiterated its support for reforms within the United Nations, particularly focusing on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), in light of discussions surrounding India's potential permanent seat at the UNSC.

In response to a query regarding remarks made by Tesla CEO Elon Musk regarding India's exclusion from a permanent seat at the UNSC, US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel affirmed the US stance on supporting reforms within UN institutions, including the UNSC. Patel emphasized the importance of updating these institutions to better reflect the realities of the 21st century.

While no specific details were provided regarding the proposed reforms, Patel underscored the recognition of the need for change within the UN system, leaving room for further discussions on the matter.

Musk had previously criticized the current structure of the UNSC, highlighting the absence of representation for populous nations like India. He called for a reevaluation of the composition of the UNSC, advocating for the inclusion of countries like India and collective representation for Africa.

India has long pursued a permanent seat at the UNSC and received support from various quarters, including the US. During the G20 Summit in New Delhi in September 2023, US President Joe Biden reiterated his backing for India's bid for a permanent UNSC seat. The joint statement issued after talks between Prime Minister Modi and President Biden reaffirmed the commitment to UN reform, including expansion in both permanent and non-permanent categories of UNSC membership.

Currently, the UNSC comprises five permanent members, known as the P5, who hold veto power over resolutions: the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China. Non-permanent members serve two-year terms and contribute to the council's agenda without veto authority.
