A woman from Kerala, one of the 16 Indian crew members on the ship that Iran took, goes back home

Ann Tessa Joseph, an Indian deck cadet hailing from Thrissur, Kerala, found herself amidst a tumultuous ordeal as she was among the 17 Indian nationals onboard the container vessel MSC Aries when it was apprehended by the Iranian military near the Strait of Hormuz. However, amidst the uncertainty and tension, Joseph's journey took a positive turn as she safely landed at the Cochin International Airport on Thursday, marking a moment of relief and reassurance for her loved ones and well-wishers.

The Ministry of External Affairs commended the collaborative efforts of the Indian Mission in Tehran and the Iranian Government in ensuring Joseph's safe return home. Upon her arrival at the airport, Joseph was warmly received by the Regional Passport Officer, Cochin, underscoring the government's commitment to facilitating her smooth transition back to familiar surroundings.

While Joseph's safe return offers solace, concerns linger for the remaining 16 Indian crew members still in Iran's custody. The Indian Mission in Tehran maintains close communication with these crew members, ensuring their well-being and providing necessary support during this challenging time.

Fortunately, the crew members are reported to be in good health and remain in constant contact with their families back in India, alleviating some of the anxieties surrounding their welfare. The Ministry of External Affairs reiterated its commitment to liaising with Iranian authorities to safeguard the interests of the remaining crew members and facilitate their safe return home.

Earlier engagements between Indian and Iranian officials, including a conversation between External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and Iranian Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian, underscore the diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the situation amicably.

Iran's Ambassador to India, Iraj Elahi, assured that all 17 Indian nationals onboard the vessel were safe, emphasizing the adverse weather conditions in the Persian Gulf as a temporary impediment to their repatriation. Nevertheless, assurances have been given that once the weather clears, arrangements will be made for the crew members to reunite with their families in India.

The seizure of the Israeli-flagged vessel amid escalating tensions between Iran and Israel underscores the complexities and challenges inherent in the geopolitical landscape of the region. However, concerted diplomatic efforts and cooperation between nations offer hope for a peaceful resolution and the safe return of all individuals involved in the incident.
