After the intelligence report, Z security for the Chief Election Commissioner: Sources

The Ministry of Home Affairs has sanctioned 'Z' category security for Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, based on an intelligence report from the Intelligence Bureau (IB). This upgrade in security protocols entails a comprehensive security detail comprising 33 security personnel, including CRPF commandos, to safeguard Kumar.

Specifically, there will be 10 armed static guards stationed at Kumar's residence, six personal security officers (PSOs) providing round-the-clock protection, and 12 armed commandos working in three shifts to escort him. Additionally, two watchers per shift and three trained drivers will be on standby to ensure Kumar's safety at all times.

The decision to elevate Kumar's security status comes amidst heightened political turmoil, particularly surrounding the ongoing protests by opposition parties like the Trinamool Congress against the Election Commission. This move is significant as preparations for the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections, commencing on April 19, are underway.

Rajiv Kumar, a retired IAS officer of the 1984 batch, assumed office as the 25th Chief Election Commissioner on May 15, 2022. He had previously served as an election commissioner in the poll body since September 1, 2020.
