Bengal Governor meets Trinamool team following party leaders' detention in Delhi

An 11-member delegation from the Trinamool Congress, led by Abhishek Banerjee, met with West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Monday to address the detention of party leaders in Delhi. This occurred after TMC leaders were detained by Delhi Police while protesting outside the office of the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Abhishek Banerjee strongly criticized the detention of TMC leaders, describing it as an assault on democracy, particularly condemning the treatment of women MPs and leaders during the incident. He questioned the necessity for such action, emphasizing that the TMC leaders were peacefully protesting and did not pose any threat.

The purpose of the TMC's protest at the ECI office was to request approval for government efforts to rebuild houses in Jalpaiguri damaged by a recent storm, which required clearance due to the Model Code of Conduct being in effect. However, despite their efforts over the past eight days, they have not received the necessary approval from the ECI.

Following their meeting with the Governor, Abhishek Banerjee stated that the Governor assured them he would address the matter with the EC on Tuesday and emphasized his commitment to fair play. The delegation also raised concerns about alleged collusion between the BJP and central agencies like the NIA and ED, providing evidence to the EC regarding an NIA official meeting a BJP leader after the announcement of poll dates.

The delegation further questioned the lack of action against NIA SP DR Singh, who allegedly met with a BJP leader after the activation of the Model Code of Conduct. They highlighted the apparent double standard, noting that the Bengal DGP was replaced after BJP demands, raising questions about why similar actions were not taken regarding the NIA directorship.

In conclusion, the TMC delegation urged the Governor to intervene and press the Election Commission to address their concerns regarding the removal of the directors of the ED and NIA.
