By year's end, two warships built in Russia will be added to the Indian Navy fleet

The Indian Navy's two warships under construction in Russia are anticipated to be ready for commissioning by the end of this year, following a delay of over two years due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

A team from the Indian Navy's Chief of Materiel Directorate recently visited Russia to oversee the project and assess progress at the shipyard where the frigates are being constructed.

Progress on the Tushil class warships is reportedly advancing well, with the first warship already launched for sea trials by the Russian Navy. Commissioning for both warships is expected by August and December this year, respectively.

The first warship will be named INS Tushil, while the second will be christened INS Tamal upon commissioning.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict has posed challenges for the project, including issues with fitting Ukrainian engines onto the frigates in Russia. Indian naval shipyard personnel had to be dispatched to assist with engine fitting.

Currently, the first ship is undergoing trials in Russian waters and is nearing readiness for delivery to the Indian Navy. Acceptance trials will follow, with an Indian warship team expected to oversee the process.

Meanwhile, progress on the other two warships of the series being built with Russian support at the Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) in India is also advancing well. The GSL is preparing to launch the first warship for trials soon, with delivery expected to be completed by mid-2026.
