Five people, including a 4-year-old girl, lost their lives on Saturday evening when a car veered off the road and fell into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district. The tragic incident occurred around 7 pm when the vehicle, en route from Thathri to Kathawa, met with the accident at Khanpura.
The Station House Officer of Thathri Police Station, Suresh Gautam, led the rescue operation, confirming the fatalities and stating that five others sustained critical injuries. The injured individuals were promptly taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
Among the deceased were identified as Mukhtiyar Ahmad, Riyaz Ahmad, Mohd Rafi, and Ireena Begum. The 4-year-old girl who lost her life was the daughter of Mohd Amir and Saima, both of whom were injured and hospitalized.
Expressing condolences over the tragedy, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha directed the district administration to provide necessary assistance to the affected families. He conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
Democratic Progressive Azad Party chairman Ghulam Nabi Azad also expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and urged the government to implement measures to reduce accidents in the Chenab Valley region.
The accident highlights the importance of road safety measures and the need for ongoing efforts to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
