Case brought against Lok Sabha member for making threats against N Biren Singh

A case has been filed against Moirangthem Totomshana, a candidate from the Rashtriya Janhit Sangharsh Party (RJSP), for allegedly violating the model code of conduct (MCC) by making derogatory statements and threatening physical harm to Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh.

The incident occurred during a live debate organized on April 2 about the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Totomshana reportedly made inflammatory remarks and threats against Chief Minister N Biren Singh during the debate.

Following the incident, the District Election Officer (DEO) of Imphal East, Khumanthem Diana Devi, instructed the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Imphal West to take legal action against Totomshana. The DEO emphasized that such behavior by a contesting candidate could promote feelings of enmity, hatred, and ill-will, leading to disharmony among political functionaries and potentially disrupting the peaceful conduct of elections.

As a result, an FIR was registered against Totomshana, and the Imphal police station issued a notice to him to appear for questioning on April 5. The notice, issued under Section 41A of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), informed Totomshana about the investigation into the FIR and the need to ascertain facts and circumstances related to the case.

Manipur is set to vote in two phases for the Lok Sabha elections on April 19 and April 26. The incident comes amid heightened political tensions in the state, which experienced ethnic violence in May of the previous year.
