China-aware India is the first to dispatch defense attachés to Asian and African countries

India is set to deploy defense attaches in various African countries, including Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, Mozambique, and strategically important Djibouti. This move marks a significant step for India, aiming to bolster strategic ties and military diplomacy, particularly in Africa, amidst heightened efforts by China to extend its influence across the continent.

New Delhi's decision to appoint defense attaches in Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, Mozambique, and Djibouti underscores its commitment to expanding strategic engagement with Africa, according to a report by news agency PTI. Djibouti, in particular, holds maritime significance due to its location surrounded by the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, making it the second time India will deploy an attaché to the region.

Several African countries have expressed keen interest in acquiring Indian military platforms, equipment, and hardware, the PTI report further noted.

Additionally, India will also station defense attaches in the Philippines, Armenia, and Poland as part of its broader diplomatic strategy. New Delhi is also contemplating rationalizing its teams of military officials in its embassies in Moscow and the high commission in London, with some defense attaches set to be redeployed to other regions as part of this rationalization process.

Approximately 16 defense attaches from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force are expected to assume their new roles soon, PTI reported.

India's growing ties with Africa have been evident in recent years, particularly in the face of China's increasing presence on the continent. India has actively engaged with African nations, highlighting common concerns, challenges, and aspirations. Notably, India's presidency of the G20 last year saw the inclusion of the 55-nation African Union as a permanent member, marking a significant milestone.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized India's leadership in the Global South during a recent event in Tokyo, underscoring India's efforts to address the concerns of developing nations. He highlighted India's proactive approach in convening meetings to address the issues faced by 125 countries, signaling India's commitment to representing the interests of the Global South.

Furthermore, India is looking to enhance defense ties with the Philippines amidst growing apprehensions over China's assertiveness in the South China Sea. The recent arms deal between India and the Philippines underscores the strengthening relationship between the two nations.

India's decision to station a defense attack in Armenia reflects the country's interest in deepening ties with India, particularly in the defense sector. Similarly, appointing a defense attache in Poland underscores India's commitment to expanding defense cooperation with EU member states.

Overall, India's diplomatic efforts to strengthen defense ties with Africa and other nations underscore its proactive approach to advancing strategic partnerships and promoting stability in the region and beyond.
