An Indian-American member of the US Congress has brought attention to what he perceives as a troubling trend: an uptick in assaults targeting Hindus and Hinduism within the United States. Characterizing it as the "genesis of a coordinated anti-Hindu onslaught," Congressman Shri Thanedar highlighted the profound sense of apprehension that these attacks have instilled within Indian Hindu communities across the nation.
Expressing concern over the lack of substantive action from local law enforcement agencies in response to these incidents, Thanedar emphasized the palpable fear pervading Hindu communities. He lamented the absence of significant strides in apprehending suspects or achieving resolutions to mitigate these challenges.
Drawing attention to recent assaults on Hindu temples, the Congressman underscored the growing frequency of such events in recent months, indicating a worrisome trend. He voiced his belief that these occurrences signify merely the initial stages of a meticulously orchestrated campaign against the Hindu community, urging unity and solidarity in the face of adversity.
In collaboration with fellow Indian American lawmakers, including Ro Khanna, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ami Bera, and Pramila Jayapal, Thanedar spearheaded an initiative to petition the US Department of Justice for a comprehensive investigation into the attacks on Hindu temples nationwide.
Speaking at a press briefing convened by the non-profit organization HinduAction in Washington, Thanedar further highlighted the proliferation of misinformation surrounding Hinduism, both online and offline. Drawing from his personal experiences and upbringing within a Hindu household, he emphasized the inherently peaceful nature of the religion while lamenting its frequent misrepresentation and misunderstanding.
Thanedar underscored the widespread geographic scope of these attacks, noting occurrences in states like California and New York, among others. He decried the apparent apathy of local authorities, asserting that it leaves the Hindu community feeling marginalized and neglected, devoid of the support they urgently require.
