From Maggi to Cerelac: An examination of Nestle's disputes throughout the years

Nestle India finds itself embroiled in controversy once again, this time over the sugar content in its baby food products sold in India. A study conducted by the Swiss investigative organization Public Eye revealed that Nestle's Cerelac and Nido baby products in India contain nearly 3 grams of sugar per serving.

In response, Nestle India stated that it has been actively working to reduce sugars in its baby food products over the past five years. The company claimed to have reduced added sugars by up to 30% in its infant cereals' portfolio while emphasizing its commitment to prioritizing high-quality ingredients and nutritional standards.

This controversy adds to a series of past issues faced by Nestle globally:

1. **High Sugar Content in Baby Food**: Reports highlighted variations in sugar content among Nestle's baby food products sold in different regions. While sugar was found in Cerelac products sold in developing countries, sugar-free options were available in Europe.

2. **Unhealthy Food Portfolio**: In 2021, Nestle faced criticism after an internal presentation revealed that a significant portion of its mainstream food and beverage range did not meet recognized health standards.

3. **Maggi Noodles Ban**: Nestle India faced a major setback in 2015 when its popular Maggi noodles were banned due to the discovery of excess lead and monosodium glutamate (MSG).

4. **Discouraging Breastfeeding**: Nestle faced allegations in 1977 of discouraging breastfeeding to promote its baby formula, leading to a boycott of Nestle products in the US and Europe.

5. **Child Labour Allegations**: Nestle faced legal challenges over allegations of child labour in cocoa farms in the Ivory Coast.

6. **Environmental Concerns**: Nestle's packaging practices raised concerns about plastic pollution and its water management practices in countries like Pakistan faced scrutiny.

These controversies highlight the ongoing challenges faced by Nestle in maintaining its reputation and addressing concerns related to product quality, public health, and environmental sustainability.
