Governor of Bengal requests that the state remove the Minister of Education due to a poll code breach

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has directed the Trinamool Congress (TMC)-led state government to remove Education Minister Bratya Basu from the Cabinet for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by organizing a political meeting at a state-run university.

The Governor's order came after a meeting was held at Gour Banga University on March 30, led by Basu along with other ministers, MPs, MLAs, and political leaders. Bose stated that Basu's decision to hold the meeting at the university grounds has brought discredit to the university system and deliberately violated the MCC.

In response to the Governor's order, Basu criticized the recommendation of his removal from the Cabinet as "laughable" and accused the Governor of misusing his constitutional post for political purposes. Basu argued that if he indeed violated the poll code, it should be raised with the Election Commission by political parties, not the Governor.

Basu further asserted that the authority to appoint or remove ministers lies with the Chief Minister according to the Indian Constitution, and accused the Governor of exceeding his constitutional limits by making such a recommendation.
