In response to Iran's unprecedented attack on Israel, India issued a statement on Sunday, urging for an "immediate de-escalation" and expressing grave concerns over the escalating hostilities between the two nations. The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized the need for restraint, diplomacy, and a return to peaceful negotiations to ensure stability in the region.
"We are seriously concerned at the escalation of hostilities between Israel and Iran which threatens the peace and security in the region," stated the official statement.
The Ministry further underscored the importance of closely monitoring the evolving situation, with Indian embassies in the region maintaining close contact with the Indian community to ensure their safety and well-being.
The Iranian attack, consisting of more than 200 missiles and drones directed towards Israeli territory, was reportedly in retaliation for an airstrike on Iran's consulate in Damascus on April 1, resulting in casualties among Revolutionary Guards and civilians. Although Israel has not officially acknowledged the airstrike, it prompted a significant response from Iran.
The Israel Defense Forces reported successfully intercepting the majority of the incoming projectiles, with only minor damage to infrastructure recorded in southern Israel.
In response to the attack, US President Joe Biden reaffirmed Washington's unwavering support for Israel's security, pledging solidarity with the Israeli people in defending against threats from Iran.
